How Do I Know If I Am Getting My Wisdom Teeth?

Sep 25, 2014Uncategorized

Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars that most people get in their late teens or early twenties. When these teeth are healthy and aligned properly they quietly surface at the back of the mouth without any problems.

However, there are instances when emerging wisdom teeth can cause pain, and damage to the areas around them.

It is important to understand if your wisdom teeth are emerging so that you can make arrangements to have them removed if they will cause problems.

The Downside of Wisdom Teeth
Emerging wisdom teeth could cause a number of problems:

Poor Alignment – Misaligned wisdom teeth can cause any number of problems, they may position themselves horizontally, angle toward or away from the second molars, or be angled inward or outward. Poor alignment of wisdom teeth can crowd or damage adjacent teeth, the jawbone, or nerves.

Impacted Teeth – When wisdom teeth only partially break through the gum they are called impacted. While this may not     sound serious it can result in painful problems in the mouth. The opening caused by the partial eruption allows bacteria common in the mouth to enter around the tooth and can cause infection. This infection can result in pain and general illness. Impacted teeth are also more susceptible to tooth decay and gum disease.

Knowing the signs of emerging wisdom teeth can help you take action to avoid these unpleasant complications.

Signs of Emerging Wisdom Teeth
Early warning signs of developing wisdom teeth include soreness and tenderness in the jaw toward the rear of your mouth and on the upper and lower jaw. If you run your finger along the back of your molars and feel along the gums you may feel the protruding teeth.

If you experience any of these symptoms and you are in your late teens and early twenties then it’s time to seek professional help from your dentist to determine if your wisdom teeth are coming in. If you are experiencing pain in these areas, don’t wait! Removing your wisdom teeth early may prevent complications.

A dentist can confirm your self-diagnosis by examining your mouth and also by taking X-Rays. X-Ray technology cannot only confirm the presence of wisdom teeth that are about to emerge but it can also determine if they are misaligned and would cause any problems.
