Top 4 Non-Invasive Ways To Reduce Bunion Pain

Nov 25, 2015Case Study, Healthy Volunteer

There’s both good news and bad news when it comes to relieving pain caused by bunions. The good news is that if your bunions aren’t too advanced, you may be able to alleviate some pain with the following methods.

The bad news is that if none of these methods work, surgery may be your only option. However, even with this bad news comes a silver lining, which you’ll read about at the end of this blog.

Pedicures and soaks

In many instances, pedicures will most likely only provide temporary relief, but your toes will look beautiful and that somehow always helps one’s attitude towards pain management (think retail therapy for a case of the blues). In some rare cases, regular pedicures may also help bunions from becoming more severe. Simply soaking your feet for 15 minutes in cool to lukewarm water and Epsom salts is also relieving.

Custom Orthotics

Visiting a chiropractor or podiatrist is the best way to get orthotics that will truly fit you. And for some people, orthotics can make a profound difference. That’s because bunions can be the result of fallen or bad arches.

Stretching

As a general guideline, stretching is good for your body. The same goes for your toes. While sitting, gently grab your big toe—or use a strap—to lightly move it in the opposite direction of your other toes. Then hold for 30 seconds. Remember to go easy and if you feel pain, stop.

Splints and spacers

Go to any pharmacy or do a search online and you will find a vast selection of devices designed to relieve bunion pain. You may have to try a couple of different options to find the one that works for you, but they can definitely help reduce pain and inflammation of your toe joints.
