New Treatment in Trials for Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a skin condition that causes skin redness and irritation. Those with psoriasis have thick red skin with flaky, whit patches called scales.

Psoriasis is a very common skin condition, affecting people of any age, most commonly between ages 15 and 35. The disease is not contagious it can be hereditary.

The medical community theorizes psoriasis occurs when the immune system mistakes healthy cells for dangerous substances. It is not however an autoimmune disorder. Skin cells grow deep below the surface, and rise to the surface about once a month. In those with psoriasis, this process happens too quickly, about every two weeks instead of four, causing dead skin cells to build up on the surface.

The following situations or medical issues may trigger a psoriasis attack or make it more difficult to treat:

• Infections, either viral or bacterial, including strep throat
• Dry air or dry skin
• Injury to the skin, including cuts, burns or bites
• Certain medication, including antimalaria drugs, lithium and beta blockers
• Excessive sunlight (sunburns)
• Lack of UV exposure
• Excessive amounts of alcohol
• Those with weakened immune systems such as people with AIDS, autoimmune disorders or those being treated with chemotherapy for cancer
• Up to 1/3 of people with psoriasis also have arthritis, known as psoriatic arthritis

If you suffer from psoriasis, you may be able to take part in an upcoming clinical research study testing a medication for the treatment of psoriasis.

Basic qualifications are:

• 18 and older
• Male or Female
• Must have Psoriasis

• No cost investigational medication
