Facts about Diabetes for National Diabetes Month

November is National Diabetes Month, created to help raise awareness about the disease that is becoming and epidemic in this country.

Here are some facts from the 2011 National Diabetes Fact Sheet:

• 8.3% of the United States Population have diabetes, that’s 25.8 million children and adults
• 79 million Americans are prediabetic
• 1.9 million new cases of diabetes were diagnosed in 2010 in people 20 years and older
• 1 in every 400 children and adolecent has diabetes
• 13 million or 11.8% of men 20 years or older has diabetes
• 12.6 million or 10.8% of women 20 years or older has diabetes
• In 2007 diabetes was listed as the underlying cause on 71, 382 death certificates and was listed as a contributing factor of 160,022 death certificates. Diabetes contributed to 231,404 deaths that year.
• Complications from diabetes includes heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, blindness, kidney disease, nervous system disease (neuropathy) and amputation
• $174 billion: Total costs of diagnosed diabetes in the United States in 2007, $116 billion for direct medical costs, $58 billion for indirect costs (disability, work loss, premature mortality)
