3 Ways To Help Prevent BPH

Dec 30, 2015Case Study, Clinical Trial, Healthy Volunteer

When it comes to Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), the key word to focus on is “benign.” In other words, it’s non-cancerous. So that’s very good news if you’re suspicious, or you’ve been told, you may suffer from BPH.

Additionally, BPH does not cause cancer nor will it affect your ability to have children. Simply put, it’s a relatively common condition—for men between the ages of 50 and 80+– associated with the aging process.

So, why do you need to be cautious with BPH if it’s benign? The symptoms for BPH and prostate cancer are very similar. If you experience any of the following, you’ll want to check in with your doctor to confirm the cause.

  • Decreased urine flow
  • Dribbling
  • Sudden or frequent need to urinate
  • Frequent urination at night
  • Feeling like your bladder isn’t completely empty

Although advancing age and having a family history of BPH can’t be prevented, there are some common recommendations to assist in your line of defense. Here are three ways you may be able to help avert BPH:

Exercise Regularly

According to research, exercise can play a role in preventing the development of BPH, as well as hinder obesity—which can be another cause of prostate problems. Excess weight around the mid section can increase your risk. While thin men can suffer from BPH too, it’s a wise practice to exercise as regularly as possible for overall health.

Make Changes To Your Diet

Maximize your intake of fruits and vegetables to ensure you are getting enough of the inflammation-fighting antioxidants, fiber, vitamins, and polyphenols that can reduce the risk of developing BPH. You may want to choose plant-based protein over animal-based protein for maximum prostate health, too.

Testosterone Therapy

Maintaining a healthy hormone balance is important since hormones play a role in prostate health. Some natural therapies have been successful in treatment as well, including hormone replacement therapy, which may aid in reducing nighttime urinations, dribbling, and urgency.
