Wisdom Teeth Videos: Why So Crazy?

If you’re a young adult between the ages of 17-25, your dentist might advise you to get your wisdom teeth removed. Since most people don’t have room in their mouth for a third row of molars, wisdom teeth removal can prevent complications down the road.

But I know what you’re thinking: Having your wisdom teeth taken out means you have a good chance of being the next crazy talker on YouTube. There are plenty of videos out there showing funny reactions, emotional ranting on the drive home, and embarrassing post-surgery antics. What is that all about? What makes them act that way?

An introduction to oral surgery

Having dental surgery sounds scary, but this procedure is very common and there are many Utah oral surgeons and dentists who perform wisdom tooth removal every month. Here are the basic steps to wisdom teeth surgery and an explanation about why so many people have strange behavior after surgery and end up on YouTube.

To begin, your dentist or oral surgeon will give you a local anesthetic to numb the area where the tooth will be removed. This is pretty common procedure for any dental work you might need, like having a cavity fixed with a filling. But here is the big difference for wisdom teeth: you’re going to need a heavier level of sedation.

The Big Sleep

If you’re having several teeth removed or if your teeth are impacted, you will need a general anesthetic. This is where you go deep into sleep while the oral surgeon goes to work opening the gum tissue and maybe even cutting the tooth into pieces in order to get it out.

This is where it gets crazy

Anesthesia relieves pain and actually induces amnesia, so you will have no memory of pain you might experience during the procedure. Anesthesia also reduces anxiety and paralyzes muscles so you are calm and comfortable during treatment.

The level of anesthesia used for dental procedures is not as heavy as that used for major surgeries, but wisdom teeth procedures are famous for leaving you in a confused state after surgery. For an hour or two after surgery, you’re awake and you can talk, and that’s where it gets a little crazy.

Common reactions to the anesthesia include

  • Becoming emotional – tears and crying
  • Confusion – disoriented, illogical or silly statements
  • Feeling groggy – sleepy or dazed feeling

Not everyone has funny or bizarre behavior afterward; you might just go home and nap. So take heart, not every candidate for wisdom tooth surgery ends up in an embarrassing YouTube video!
