Wisdom Teeth and Why Should I Get Rid of Them

Wisdom teeth are the third molars that appear much later in life usually in late teen to early adulthood. It’s believed that they are called wisdom teeth because they appear when you are much “wiser” than a child, so why get rid of them? There is often not room in your mouth for the extra teeth, it affects other teeth as they develop therefore becoming impacted or “coming in sideways.”

Impacted wisdom teeth fall into one of several categories:

  • Mesioangular impaction the most common form of impact, this means the tooth is angled forward, towards the front of the mouth.
  • Vertical impaction is when the tooth does not erupt fully through the gum line.
  • Distoangular impaction means the tooth is angled backward, towards the rear of the mouth.
  • Horizontal impaction is the least common form, which occurs when the tooth is angled fully ninety degrees sideways, growing into the roots of the second molar.

Wisdom teeth are extracted for 2 reasons, either they are already impacted or they have potential to become problematic.

JBR Clinical Research is recruiting patients with impacted wisdom teeth for a clinical trial, if you or someone you know may be a candidate please visit our site.
