How to Relieve Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia or BPH Symptoms
BPH cannot be cured, so focus on BPH treatments that can reduce symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). WIth proper attention, you may be able to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.
Symptoms of BPH
BPH commonly occurs as a man ages. In fact, half of men 75 and older have symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Urinary problems associated with BPH include:
- Weak urine stream
- Sensation that your bladder is not empty after you urinate
- A feeling like you need to urinate
- Trouble starting a urine stream
- Inability to completely stop urinating (sometimes called “dribbling”)
If you or someone you know is experiencing one or more of the symptoms above, there are several steps to take to alleviate the symptoms.
Strategies to Relieve BPH Symptoms
Home treatments cannot “cure” or stop prostate enlargement, but these treatments can reduce or control benign prostatic hypertrophy.
- Double voiding.
After urinating, relax your body for several moments and then try urinating again.
- Avoid alcohol and caffeine.
Because alcohol and caffeine are diuretics, or make your body get rid of water, , they cause you to urinate more frequently.
- Stop certain medications.
Taking over-the-counter antihistamines, decongestants, nasal sprays, and allergy pills can make BPH symptoms worse. However, consult your doctor or pharmacist before you completely cut out these medications or if you are going to start taking new ones.
- Spread fluid intake throughout the day.
Fluid intake in the evening should be limited-especially if you wake up at night to urinate.
- Take your time.
Give yourself plenty of time to urinate and relax before you go to the bathroom. Rushing could prevent you from emptying the bladder completely, which could make BPH symptoms seem worse.
- Sit down.
Urinating while sitting instead of standing can help relieve BPH symptoms.
If you are following the strategies above, but you’re still having BPH symptoms, you may need medication to help control the symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia. Consult with your Salt Lake City healthcare professional to determine the treatment that is best for you.
