Knowing the Symptoms of Psoriasis

Dec 29, 2011CenExel JBR, Clinical Trial

The symptoms of psoriasis can appear slowly or suddenly. In most cases psoriasis goes away and then flares up repeatedly.

Psoraisis presents with red, irritated patches of skin. The most common areas where outbreaks occur are the elbows, knees and trunk, however it can appear anywhere on the body.

The patches or dots on the skin may have any of the following characteristics:

  • Itchy
  • Dry and covered with scales; silver, flaky skin.
  • Salmon colored
  • Raised and thick

Other symptoms may include:

  • Lesions in the genital area in men
  • Pain or aching in the joints (psoriatic arthritis)
  • Changes in nails including nail thickening, yellow-brown spots, dents on the nail surface and separation of the nail from the base
  • Severe scalp dandruff

Psoriasis has five main types:

  • Plaque – The most common form of psoriasis; thick, red patches of skin are covered by flaky, silver-white scales
  • Erythrodermic – Large areas of skin covered in an intense red
  • Guttate — Small, salmon spots appearing on the skin
  • Inverse – Redness and irritation in the armpits, groin, and in between overlapping skin
  • Pustular — White blisters surrounded by red, irritated skin.
