Clinical Trials For Kids
“I have 2 children, when my oldest daughter was 10 months old she got RSV and had to be hospitalized. I knew that small babies were at risk for getting this virus, but honestly I didn’t think much about my older infant getting the virus. We were very fortunate, after a night in the hospital with regular nebulizer treatments my daughter was discharged and made a full recovery. It was A frightening experience, I wouldn’t wish it on anyone, and I realize we were lucky, not all RSV cases are so simple, some are much more severe and don’t have a happy ending.
4 years later I was taking my second child to her 2 month appointment and her doctor talked to me about a study that they were doing for an RSV vaccine. It required a 6 month commitment several doses, trips to the clinic and journaling, but it could mean that children get vaccinated for RSV and fewer parents would have to go through what we went through.
We have just wrapped up the 6 month trial and it was a very positive experience. The staff of nurses made me feel at ease, explained everything and made me comfortable with the experience I never felt that I was putting my child at risk. I am fortunate that my baby is healthy and could participate in this study so that at some point babies who might be at risk can be protected.
