8 Enlarged Prostate or BPH Symptoms

Prostate issues can be difficult to discuss. But if you are a man over the age of 40 and you are having problems urinating, you may need to see a doctor to discuss your symptoms to see if you have BPH (Benign Prostate Hypertrophy. Ignoring these symptoms can cause more serious complications.

Read on to discover some of the main symptoms of BPH:

  1. Trouble starting to urinate
The body’s tube that takes urine from the bladder is called the urethra. If the prostate is enlarged, it will take longer for pressure to build up and pass through the urethra. This BPH symptom is dangerous to the kidneys as it can cause urinary retention.
  2. A weak flow
If you find yourself spending a long time in front of the urinals due to a weak urine stream, it could mean that your prostate is enlarged and partially blocked.
  3. Stop and go urination
Urine that cannot easily flow out of the bladder will cause you to start urination and then stop – even before your bladder is empty. This symptom becomes tough on the body when you try to force the urine out. The straining action affects the surrounding muscles.
  4. Dribbles after urination
The pressure that builds up on the prostate due to BPH can cause dribbling after you urinate. This uncomfortable issue is caused due to urine that collects in the upper part of the body’s urethra.
  5. An urgency to get to the bathroom
The nerves inside of your bladder may stop signaling to your brain correctly, so you have a sudden need to urinate. This feeling in the bladder is sometimes called a spastic bladder. A spastic bladder can be a symptom of a urinary tract infection or even diabetes.
  6. Sensation that your bladder is not totally empty
BPH sufferers describe a common feeling of an inability to completely empty their bladders. This is caused by an obstruction of the urethra. While this is mostly described as an uncomfortable feeling, not emptying the bladder may also cause other complications.
  7. Frequent UTIs
A urinary tract infection (UTI) has similar symptoms to BPH. A doctor will treat a UTI with antibiotics. If you feel that you are suffering from an UTI, visit your doctor. But be sure to ask if the UTIs could be a symptom of a BPH problem.
  8. Pain during urination (dysuria)
Men who experience pain while urinating may have damage to their kidneys. The pain while urinating is most commonly felt in the lower back, thighs or pelvis.

Ignoring prostate problems can lead to more serious problems, so it is important to consult a doctor.
